Situated on the northern point of the isle of Unst in the Shetlands, Muckle Flugga Lighthouse is the most northerly lighthouse in Britain. Nearer to Bergen in Norway than to Aberdeen, Muckle Flugga was established in 1854.

A bit of history
It was designed and built by Thomas and David Stevenson, the father and uncle of the author Robert Louis Stevenson. The writer visited the island as a young man and it is believed that it influenced him in his creation of Treasure Island.
It was first decided to build a lighthouse in 1851, first lighthouse constructed in 1854. This was almost immediately compromised by a storm which burst open the door to the living quarters.
The new lighthouse was built in 1855 on Muckle Flugga, after some back and forth about whether to build it on Muckle Flugga or Lamba Ness.
Muckle Flugga Whiskey + Lore
If you’re a fan of whiskey, this is potentially an island for you to visit. I was searching the interweb for reports of ghosts on the island as I thought it was bound to have at least one, and instead was suggested Muckle Flugga whiskey. Maybe the whiskey is strong enough that it makes you see ghosts! Who knows.
There is some mysticism surrounding this island though. According to Shetland folklore, Muckle Flugga and Out Stack (the latter obviously known to locals as Da Shuggi) were formed when two giants, Herman and Saxa, were both in love with the same mermaid. They then decided to throw large rocks at each other, one of which became Muckle Flugga, another Da Shuggi. Honestly, it’s a very sensible and measured way of dealing with jealousy.
